Something a Little Different: Skin Care

I know this isn’t quite art related but hear me out… How can we produce our best work if we aren’t feeling our best? What am I going on about this early in the day? Skin care. I’ve recently started taking better care of my skin at 52 and I’m going to share with you what I’ve learned and where to get it. (Canadian links, sorry international peeps)

Shower Spa: The African Net Sponge (this is about to replace the shower scrunchies – I’ve got a net sponge, it’s amazing, I love it, get one now they’re gonna sell out everywhere), post shower lotions, body oils, and the “newest self care trend”, body dusting powders. (https://a.co/d/0Px5baY)

Once out of the shower I will then use an all over unscented body lotion, Lubriderm is great and wallet friendly (https://a.co/d/dZR8jIK). I then spray with a body oil, I use Aveeno (https://a.co/d/bQqu2qQ), lightly rubbing it in, then applying the body powder (directions to make below). If you’re still with me, I promise you’ll feel like a million bucks.

Talc powder is not good for us, and dusting powder sold in stores is ridiculously overpriced, smells awful, and often contains unidentifiable chemicals.

Before any of you go purchasing anything, here’s how to make your own talc free, non-allergenic dusting powder from natural ingredients in your home, for PENNIES, and a link to a big, fluffy, body pouf, and cardboard container for your powder and the poof.

Added bonus: you can make your own, unique scent blend for your powder, or you can leave it entirely unscented.  The powder also acts as a natural deodorant & is anti-chafing

You will need:

3/4 cup cornstarch

1/4 cup baking soda

1 large ziplock bag

1 cardboard container large enough for the powder you’re making, and the pouf

Note: it’s very important to use a CARDBOARD container. Do not use plastic or glass, as they can trap humidity, leading to your powder getting icky lumps. There is no fix once you have lumps.

Sift the cornstarch and baking soda into a ziplock bag. Shake well. For unscented dusting powder, empty contents of bag into your powder container. Top with poof. Store in a dry place.

Spray your favourite essential oil or perfume (please no patchouli no one wants that) onto two cotton balls. Empty contents, including cotton balls, into your cardboard container. Remove cotton balls after 24 hours. Shake powder again. Return to cardboard container.

To use: dip pouf in powder. Apply liberally all over body. Be careful in those sensitive areas.

(Here’s the container & pouf I use. https://a.co/d/6w66vnw I very lightly scent mine with sandal wood essential oil. https://a.co/d/iAs9lk2)

Facial care: I’m asked all the time how I still look young at 52. Here is my regime.

In the shower I use CeraVe’s facial cleanser (https://a.co/d/fUTBDfU) on my face and neck, being careful around the eyes. Once out of the shower I use their Resurfacing Retinal Serum (https://a.co/d/1FclIvF) and their Ultra-Light Moisturizing Gel (https://a.co/d/c9xt2WY). I don’t wear makeup and their gel has sunblock in it.

I hope this helps anyone looking for a nice routine that will make you look and feel like you’ve just come from the spa! Happy spa day my beauties!

With Love From,

The Rambling Artist
