The West Coast Trail
This year, I will be doing the WCT trail with my husband. We were lucky enough to get spots in the lottery. The West Coast Trail, is a rugged 75-kilometer trek along the southwestern edge of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, it is a bucket-list adventure for many hikers. Known for its stunning scenery, challenging terrain, and unpredictable weather, this trail is not for the faint of heart. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on the trail but our two are happy to help us train. Proper preparation is essential for a successful and enjoyable experience and weโve just started undertaking this in the last month (May 2024).
The West Coast Trail is renowned for its variety of obstacles, including:
โข Muddy paths that can become treacherous after rain.
โข Ladders and cable cars that require upper body strength.
โข Rocky shorelines and slippery boardwalks that test your balance.
โข Steep ascents and descents that demand strong leg muscles.
Weโve been hiking on the weekends to start getting ramped up. The past couple hikes have been approximately 10km in length and about 1000ft in elevation change. We also have a couple shorter backpacking trips planned before we do the trail in September. During the week I workout on the treadmill three times a week and two days a week I do lower body workouts. Iโm limited on upper body workouts due to a shoulder injury.
I canโt wait to share more of our training hikes and backpacking adventures with everyone. Hiking is one of my favourite activities, it gets you out there in the wilderness with nature, gives you a good workout and hopefully some beautiful scenery.
Ultimately, the West Coast Trail is not just a test of endurance, but a journey of discovery, both of the natural world and of your own potential.
Love,
The Rambling Artist
